FAQ: Should I be taking thyroid hormones if my TSH levels are normal?

Question: Do you think that it is safe to be taking thyroid hormones if my TSH levels are in the normal range?

Answer: Are you referring to doctor prescribed thyroid hormones, such as Thyroxine?  If so, what was your doctor’s answer?  Since you didn’t supply some needed information in your question, such whether or not your thyroid is damaged or not able produce it’s own hormones, I cannot know for sure if you should keep taking Thyroxine or not.  Your best bet is to ask your doctor.  I am sure there is a good reason he or she is instructing you to continue taking your Thyroxine.

If, by chance, you are somehow taking thyroid hormones that were not prescribed to you… then you are playing with fire.  Taking hormones (or any medication) that was not specifically meant for you can alter the balance of your endocrine system and can cause future health issues.
